Feeling the Heat? What is Perimenopause?
For some women it can feel like menopause hits all of a sudden – others can feel like it’s a long time coming. The transition between menopause and your reproductive years is called perimenopause, literally translating to “around menopause.” As if menopause wasn’t bad enough, you have to deal the symptoms before it even starts!
What causes perimenopause?[i]
Perimenopause is the result of your ovaries slowing down and providing the decreasing levels of progesterone and estrogen. This causes hormone levels to fluctuate drastically and then your body reacts to the lack of or increase in estrogen levels.
How long does perimenopause last?[ii]
Perimenopause can last anywhere from ten years to a few months depending on the person and when their perimenopausal symptoms start. Most women start perimenopause in their forties, but some women will start as early as their mid thirties or as late as their fifties.
Early Signs of perimenopause[iii]
The first sign of perimenopause is usually some change in your period, whether it is time between periods, the length of your cycle, or heaviness. Many women will experience shorter periods of time between menstrual cycles, have a heavier period, or have times when they skip a period.
What are the symptoms?[iv]
v Breast tenderness
v Irregular periods
v Decreased sex drive and vaginal dryness
v Difficulty sleeping , usually as a result of hot flashes
v Loss of bone mass, putting you at risk for osteoporosis
v Decreased fertility
Can I still get pregnant?[v]
Some exciting (or not so exciting) news is that during this transition you can still get pregnant; it just may be more difficult. If you want to get pregnant, there are fertility treatments you can go through to increase your chances. If you don’t want to get pregnant, maintain your previous pregnancy prevention routine.
