Stress and Your Period: A Cycle You Can Change
It’s nearly impossible for today’s modern woman to not feel stressed given everything that has been thrown on our plates. While stress can sometimes be a good thing, like when it motivates you to be productive – stress can also have a negative impact on your health.
How Stress Affects Your Period:
Specifically, stress can have a number of factors on your period. It can easily delay your period and it is one of the most common causes of a missed period. If your period does come late, it is most likely because you were under stress while you were ovulating. If ovulation is delayed, your period, which normally comes 14 days later, is also delayed. 
The extent to which stress can have on a women’s cycle varies. No two women are the same. Some women experience lighter and shorter periods and some will not bleed at all. Your body will only go back to your regular menstruation cycle once you have relieved some of the stress symptoms. If you continue to suffer from severe stress, then it could have long term effects on your cycle. So it’s important to keep healthy and see a doctor if necessary.
Why This Happens:
Like the other functions of the body, the menstrual cycle is regulated by the brain. Within the brain is the hypothalamus, a gland that controls when an egg is released by an ovary. The hypothalamus also sends a signal to the uterus so that the egg and uterine lining are shed during a female’s monthly period. These functions take place regularly in a healthily functioning body. When stress occurs, no matter what the cause, your body secretes cortisol. This hormone diminishes the release of estrogen and progesterone, which are necessary for regular menstrual cycles to take place. If you are experiencing poor nutrition from stress, this also prevents the hypothalamus from releasing an egg because there are not enough proteins in the brain. 
What You Can Do:
The quickest way to alleviate stress is to engage in some simple stress reliever. Here are a few tips from Women’s Health Magazine:
Tea off- Drinking tea can lower stress levels.
Just say “%&* it!”-Swearing reduces stress and helps you blow off steam.

Treat yourself- Indulge in something sweet. Flavonoids in cocoa relax your body’s blood vessels so that arteries can dilate, reducing blood pressure. Look for dark chocolate or cocoa powder, which have more of the stress-busting compound than milk chocolate, and keep it to one serving.
Chew the fat- Boost your mood by adding foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. People who consume more of these foods are happier, less impulsive, and generally more agreeable.
