Health and the Holidays
The holidays are always stressful. You need to decorate the house, find gifts for all the important people in your life, make more food then you could possibly eat, and attend more events and parties then you do in all the other months combined. The stress is enough to wear even the strongest of women down. It is important to remember yourself in the mix of all this crazy or you’ll never make it to the New Year.
You may have a million things to do, but it won’t hurt if you take a few hours out of the week to relax.
Instead of trying to make all the holiday food yourself, delegate to some of your other friends and relatives. Take the time you were going to spend making pies and go out and get a massage. You’re tired shoulders could use some pampering and you need a break from the hectic environment.[i]
You can also cut down on the hassle of holiday gift shopping with online shopping. You don’t have to hike out to the store and everything you could ever want is only a few clicks away. Shopping online can also save you money if you compare prices on different sites or invest in gift cards. Use some of those extra savings to get something special for yourself. You know you’ve been eying those killer heels for weeks.[ii]
Learn to say no. You get this advice every year, but do you ever actually practice it? It can feel like we have to do everything someone asks of us, but sometimes that extra something can push you to your limit.
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, exercise is a great way to reduce stress. Even small amounts of consistent exercise can improve your mood and keep you focused. If you don’t have time for a full workout, consider a brisk walk. Exercise is also a great way to prevent the holiday weight gain. [iii]
Taking pressure off yourself not only benefits you emotionally and physically, it helps the people around you. When you are stressed and tired it rubs off on your loved ones or puts them in a bad mood. Everyone is happier when you are.
