Easy ways to sneak exercise in at the office
Are you one of the millions of people who sit at a desk all day? Did you know that if you sit all day, you’re at risk for gaining weight, straining your back, wrists, eyes and neck, and losing muscle tone? 1 While you might not be able to change your day job, you can certainly help the situation by getting up and getting moving! Start with these easy steps:
- Start before you get to the office – The best part is, you don’t have to wake up any earlier! Getting some exercise during your commute is a great way to start your day, whether you park in the back of the parking lot, get off the subway at an earlier stop, or take the stairs versus the elevator in your building.
- Invest in a standing desk – Now you don’t even have to leave your desk to get out of your chair. Standing desks are becoming more and more popular, especially since most are now adjustable so you aren’t stuck standing all day should your feet need a rest.
- Take hourly breaks – Set an alarm on your computer to remind yourself to get out of your chair every hour, even if it’s just to stretch. If there are stairs in your building, try climbing up and down a few flights. You can even sneak into a conference room and get in some exercise, bonus if you have weights or other workout equipment right in your office!
- Convince your boss to get the office involved – Some offices have already jumped on the bandwagon of fitting fitness into the workday for the whole office. Yoga is a popular option because it’s not going to make you sweat as much as cardio, and some variations allow you to participate without even changing out of your work clothes. Start by dropping your boss or HR department some hints on how wellness programs can benefit everyone.
If you’re sick of sitting all day behind your computer screen, do something about it! With these simple ideas, you can easily go from sitting most of your day to finding a fun and easy way to get up and get active.
