Why is Fibroid Awareness Month Important?
As we mentioned in our Myosure Q & A post, July is Fibroid Awareness Month. If you or someone you know has experienced fibroids, you might know how frustrating, painful, and lonely the experience can be. Fibroid Awareness Month is so important because it brings awareness to the issue and lets women with fibroids know they are not alone.
Raising awareness about fibroids could also encourage women to seek a diagnosis and help for fibroids. As women, we often put our own health and wellness on the backburner, and Fibroid Awareness Month is a time to remind us to look into the cause of heavy periods and the symptoms associated with them. Women may be dealing with symptoms that they don’t even know are caused by fibroids or that help that is available.
What is the White Dress Project?
The White Dress Project works to raise awareness of uterine fibroids through education, support, and advocacy, and its fundraising efforts go toward research into the epidemic of uterine fibroids. The organization name plays into the fact that women with fibroids often avoid white and light clothing due to heavy periods and potential accidents that come along with the condition. It encourages women to make the pledge to proudly wear white dresses and to bring awareness to the condition as well as support for other women with fibroids. Fibroids are not something to be ashamed of and the White Dress Project boldly and beautifully represents this.
Why are Funds and Research Important?
The organization not only serves as a place where women can share their stories and bring their own experiences out into the open, but it is dedicated to raising funds for fibroid research. By age 50 incidence was greater than 80% for African American women and nearly 70% for white women 1. Fibroids impact women socially, physically as well as economically, due to lost work days, treatments costs, and potential pregnancy complications! More research is an important step in learning more about the cause of fibroids.
Why is July Important?
While work is being done year-round to help provide resources and treatment options for women, making July the official month for awareness is an important step. The 16 by 2016 campaign that the White Dress Project is leading includes a petition to get more states to sign on to pass resolutions to have the month recognized. Currently, Florida, Georgia, the city of New Orleans, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. New York, Maryland, and Virginia honor Fibroids Awareness. Next the White Dress Project is working on Illinois, Texas, and California.
