6 Romantic Date Ideas for Memorable (and Sexy) Fun
Posted byBethany Johnson
Dinner and a movie, while usually nice, is just a little meh for Valentine’s Day. Plus, reservations are likely full by now, and speaking of full, imagine the movie theater. This special occasion only comes once a year, so instead of doing the same old same old, get creative.
Here are six sweet, sexy and romantic date ideas to have some fun and fuel the flame.
1. Go All Out — At Home
Everyone seems to think there are two options for dates: Either go out and spend money, or hunker down, stay home and save. Why not mash the two? Spend what you’ve budgeted as a couple for a fancy night out, but do it at home by bringing the exotic outing to you. Here’s how.
Start by choosing a romantic setting: think Paris, Buenos Aires or Bali. Splurge and decorate your kitchen and living room in exotic textiles. Download and play cultural music while cooking the choicest cuts of oddly flavorful cuisine native to your chosen destination. Go all out with top-shelf cocktails or fine Italian wine, for example. Learn a few sexy words in a foreign language to toss around as you indulge and enjoy one another.
2. Do the Sunrise Thing
Bring your partner breakfast in bed and watch the sunrise together. This one might seem cliche, but really, have you done it lately? Watching the sun rise is something earlier generations did often, and the longevity (and heat) of their relationships speaks volumes for the romantic practice. The temporary pain of waking up is well worth the immense pleasure of being up, a sweet metaphor for romance itself.
3. Weird Workout
If you don’t usually exercise with your guy, spend an hour biking, hiking or kick boxing together. These romantic date ideas let you move your thing without being too much of a tease. When you get sweaty together, he can enjoy the view and you stay completely innocent.
If, on the other hand, you already work out together regularly, ditch the usual regimen for something you’ve never done before. Go rock climbing, snowboarding, trapezing or take a private Zumba class together.
4. Improve Your Improv
Learn to think on your feet together by joining an intro to improv class. Laughter benefits both body and brain, according to the Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine.1 If that weren’t enough, you’ll also learn more about one another. You may be surprised at what comes out of his — and your own — mouth! Be sure to take a group class, so you can see your guy engaging total strangers as well as his most intimate partner all at once.
5. Not Just Hot Air
Take a hot air balloon ride, and enjoy the surreal floating sensation together. There’s nothing quite like experiencing an indescribable feeling in tandem. For years to come, you’ll try to explain your balloon ride to others only to fall short, shrug and make eye contact with your partner, the only person who truly understands. On your flight, point out places monumental to your relationship, like your favorite coffee place, mutual friends’ neighborhoods, and the location of your first date.
6. Stargazing on Steroids
Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, take one of the most classic romantic date ideas, like stargazing, and enhance it with technology. Download one of the mobile apps recommended by NASA and get your geek on under the night sky. From star charting maps to Martian blasting games, you’ll be oo’ing and aah’ing in unison all night.
These are all such great ideas, you may have trouble choosing just one: A predicament easily fixed by combining your favorites for an especially intimate Valentine’s Day. Another solution is to use V-day to kick off a series of hot dates — one every weekend for the next few months. Either way, your creative, out-of-the-box, sexy, wildly romantic date ideas will stoke the fire and convey your love for each other.
