Summer Activities and Menstruation Don’t Have to Be a Dicey Combo

Summer activities are in full swing! Rooftop pool soirees and trips to the beach are filling up your social calendar … but the dates are coinciding with your menstruation calendar. Don’t let your period put a stop to your plans. Here’s what you can do to be confident in a swimsuit and how to enjoy fun in the sun to the fullest.
You’re used to having a full arsenal of pads and tampons. Don’t forget to transfer it from your everyday bag to your beach tote! There is nothing like the early or unexpected start of your period to ruin your summer activities and your swimsuit.
If you’re worried that the string might show through the bottom of your suit or shorts, most times tucking the string in the suit’s lining provides enough camouflage.
One great reason to take a dunk during your period is that exercise may help reduce menstrual cramps, bloating and even lift your PMS-related moodiness, due to the endorphins released while swimming, notes Penn Medicine.2 Tampons and menstrual cups may offer you some extra confidence in the pool, thin pads can be fine while lounging on the deck, just avoid the ones with wings and check to make sure it isn’t visible.
Choose Colors Carefully
Give yourself a little insurance against the appearance of leaks by wearing dark suits during your period. Wearing a white bathing suit or white shorts during your period is tempting fate. Go with black or navy just in case.
Layers are your friend, too. Bring a pair of shorts or pants to slip on over your swimsuit. A sarong or other beach cover-up can also buy you a little confidence at the pool.
