The Definitive Period Playlist to Match Your Mood
Posted byAlicia Trent
It’s a total cliche, but you know it’s true: your menstrual cycle is a rollercoaster of emotion. One minute, you’re furious at the world. Ten seconds later, you’re falling into a sobbing fest over a commercial. But rather than curling into a ball and waiting for all the feeling to settle down, consider the magic of a period playlist.
Check out these suggestions to create the perfect playlist.
Have a Good Cry
Feeling the need to let the tears flow during your flow? There are plenty of songs that aid in a good cry. A top choice is “Cry” by Faith Hill. Turn up this song for the full effect and cry along to Faith Hill’s forlorn tune. Country not your style? Adele has you covered in the sad song department. Add “Someone Like You,” to your period playlist for a walk down melancholy lane. (Nothing like a song about failed relationships to trigger those tears!) Another option is “Good Enough” by Sarah McLachlan, a song about never feeling good enough. (Been there, done that!)
Sing Out Your Frustrations
When the anger is boiling, a good angry song is perfect to blast. A goodie is Alanis Morissette’s 1995 “You Oughta Know.” Feel no shame in turning up the volume and screaming along to the song. Another good choice is “Call Me When You’re Sober,” by Evanescence. The beat of this song alone is therapeutic. Need a hip-hop fix? Consider adding “Drop the World,” by Lil Wayne and Eminem to your period playlist. The song is perfect when feeling mad at the world. Note that the song has clean and explicit versions so be mindful when singing along in public!
Choose a Pick-Me-Up Melody
There’s nothing like an upbeat tune to boost the mood and liven your spirit. Consider a head-bopping disco beat, such as the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive.” The song is sure to generate some singing, not to mention kitchen dancing. If you’re in the mood for a more modern cheerful song, look no further than “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. If this song doesn’t get those positive juices flowing, then you may just be asleep. Another period playlist must-have: “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars. (Feel free to repeat the line, “You’re amazing just the way you are” as many times as needed.) The inspiration behind his words? You, of course!
Jam to Empowering Songs
To pump up your period playlist, look for songs that inspire confidence. Empowering songs help you shake out any bad vibes and prep you to conquer the world. Consider including the classic “I Will Survive,” by Gloria Gaynor (famously remade later by Diana Ross). Girl, you know you will survive. Katy Perry’s “Roar” is another option when empowerment is the goal. And don’t forget “Fight Song,” by Rachel Platten. The song starts slow and then explodes into an upbeat chorus based on perseverance. Let the words empower you to take on whatever challenges lie ahead. (Whether that means conquering your greatest fear or just getting those dishes washed!)
