End Summer Vacation With a Bang With These Fun Ideas

Everyone loves summer, but unfortunately, the warm season can’t last forever. What if there were a few ways you could really savor and make the most of it?
As fall approaches, lazy days and sweet, sultry nights will soon be a thing of the past. Use these tips to spark your creativity and come up with some fun ways to soak up the last few weeks of summer vacation.
Hit the Road, Jack
If you still haven’t made summer vacation plans, now’s your chance. University of California, Davis reports that 55 percent of Americans aren’t using their paid time off. The research, conducted by Project: Time Off, also states that an annual holiday may cut the risk of heart attack in women by 50 percent.1
With data like that, you can’t afford to not plan a trip.
Maximize your budget by using booking comparison sites for great travel deals. Most sites even have international specials so you can plan that exotic trip for less.
Want to enjoy the trip as much as the destination? A road trip is your best bet. Give it a theme like great historic sites, oddball attractions, theme parks, or best places to eat. Make a list of must-see spots and have fun discovering new ones along the way.
If your bank account is putting a damper on your summer vacation dreams, plan a staycation instead. Staycations let you leverage short day trips and avoid hotel costs by returning home every night. Make it an adventure by including a trip to a day spa, trying a new restaurant, or hitting up museums and other local attractions you normally don’t have time to enjoy.
Savor the Last Bite
Cookouts are a summertime staple so grab your grill, friends and food. Then, barbecue something delicious. Experiment with everything from pizza to dessert and create a new signature dish. Even better, knock on a few doors and plan a spontaneous end-of-summer block party in your neighborhood. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and share the best of your grilled creations.
If something frosty and sweet is more your speed, now’s the perfect time for frozen treats. Grab an ice cream maker and dream up a new favorite flavor. Or, use your blender to make everything from ice pops and slushies to Italian ices and frozen drinks.
You can get out of the kitchen completely and let someone else do the cooking. Many cities host annual “taste of” events during the summer. These celebrations are perfect for finding hidden culinary gems right in your backyard.
Summer Night Adventures
Summer nights were made for entertainment. For movie buffs, mix it up and plan a trip to the local drive-in or contact your park district to see if they’re hosting any outdoor movie nights.
Mother Nature displays some of her best work during summer evenings, so go on a hunt for the most spectacular place to watch the sun set. If that place happens to be your backyard, string up some lights, grab some pillows and blankets and invite friends over for a laid-back sunset potluck.
Many cities, even small towns, have lots of festivals, county fairs, concert series, food truck rallies, beer and wine tastings, live music, art walks, craft shows and other amazing events just waiting for you to discover this summer. Search your local chamber, event websites and Facebook groups to see what going on near you.
Just because back-to-school is right around the corner doesn’t mean the fun is over yet. Use these ideas to create your own summer fun list and end the last few weeks of summer vacation right.
